The questions overlanders ask us most often about entering Thailand with their own motorcycle, car or motorhome.
It's a pre-approval issued by Thailand's Department of Land Transport that allows a foreign-registered motorcycle, car or motorhome to enter and be driven in the country. It has to be arranged in advance, through a licensed tour agency — you can't apply for it at the border itself.
Motorcycles and cars: 7–15 working days depending on standard or express processing. Motorhomes and campervans: around 60 working days, with no express option, so early planning matters most for larger rigs.
No — approval has to be in place before you travel to the crossing. Arriving without one risks your vehicle being refused entry or held up while you find another solution.
The FVP is the advance approval you get through a licensed agent before travelling. The TIP is issued at the border itself once your FVP is approved, and covers the vehicle's temporary import into Thailand.
Leaving Thailand after your FVP or TIP has expired can mean a fine, and being flagged in a way that prevents you bringing a vehicle into Thailand again in future. If your plans change, let your agent know as early as possible.
The licensed agent who issues your FVP is responsible for you while you're in Thailand, so you'll generally stay in contact with them during your trip unless a separate guide arrangement has been made.
Join a group crossing to split the border clearance fee with other travellers, and apply a few months ahead of your entry date to avoid paying for express processing.
No — some crossings have stopped accepting certain vehicle types, and rules can shift with little warning. It's worth confirming your specific route before locking in travel plans.
